IPTV terminology explained without the marketing shortcuts

Understanding IPTV terminology makes it easier to compare players, devices and subscription information. The terms below describe different parts of the viewing workflow and should not be treated as interchangeable.

IPTV

IPTV is a delivery method in which television content is delivered over Internet Protocol networks. It is not itself a guarantee about content rights, channel availability or stream quality.

M3U

M3U is a playlist format commonly used by compatible media players. A playlist can contain media locations and metadata. An M3U file or URL is therefore configuration data, not the television service itself.

EPG

EPG means Electronic Program Guide. It provides schedule information that a compatible player can display alongside channels. EPG data can fail independently of live video because the guide and video are separate pieces of information.

VOD

VOD means Video on Demand. Unlike a live stream, the viewer selects content for playback from an on-demand catalogue. Availability depends on the specific service and player.

Catch-up

Catch-up TV refers to supported programs being available after their live broadcast for a limited period. It differs from a permanent VOD catalogue and depends on service and player support.

4K

4K describes a display or source resolution. A 4K television does not automatically make every stream 4K; the source, player, device and network all need to support the higher-resolution workflow.
